Colour blocking as a trend has been bubbling quietly away in the world of fashion, since the catwalks of Jil Sander and Raf Simmons in 2008. This year however, it has exploded onto the fashion scene in the biggest way with everyone from Missoni to Diane Von Furstenberg sending models down the runway looking like they'd just escaped from a box of crayons. Every colour imaginable was seen, from rich jewel tones to bright fluorescents - and you can be sure that all this colour will quickly make it's way to a high street near you. Don't be frightened off it though - just follow Planet's simple rules and you'll have one of the biggest fashion trends of 2011 nailed:
Colour Block in Style
To ensure you hit this fashion trend bang on, choose the right combinations of colours for maximum impact. Think clashing rather than matching i.e. pink with purple, orange with blue, red with pink and cobalt blue with red. The more mismatched the better!

Think Bright
In order to colour block from head to toe perfectly, you need to go as bright as possible with your colours!  This season is not about pastels - they'll just look wishy-washy.  Pile on the brights and clash, clash, clash.

Invest in a pair of coloured trousers
All colour clocking fans should invest in a bright pair of trousers e.g. green, red or pink.  For the less brave amongst you team with a pain top in grey or black.  Or go all out and pick a clashing hue to really show off your fashion knowledge.

Think about fabrics carefully
Be careful about your choice of fabrics and colours - if you stick to cotton fabrics in fluorescent colours - you may look like you're a time traveller from a 90s rave! Try and look for rich sumptuous fabrics like silk and satin to give a splash of luxury and a real designer feel.
For the less brave amongst you,
don't worry you can still work
the colour block trend by
following these simple rules:
Colour block but don't colour clash!
Instead of clashing your colours, go for one bright vibrant colour from head to toe. For example wear a bright green maxi dress, or pair a red top with red trousers. Super cute.
Tone it down with a Neutral
Some of the designers showed fabulously bright trousers and skirts paired with a plain and simple white t-shirt. This is an easy way to ease yourself into this trend, and you could also wear your brights for work with a black or navy jacket. If you are going to wear a neutral, make sure it's in a nice fabric to continue the luxurious feel.
Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise.
The easiest way to ease yourself into this (or any) trend is to change your accessories. Wear your normal work suit with a bright pink bracelet, vivid blue shoes or a highlighter orange belt - it will bring it bang up to date.
